Getting Help With My Vision

One day when I was at work, I realized that I was having a hard time making out the memos and texts that were right in front of me. Instead of ignoring the issue, I decided to meet with an eye doctor. Although I was sure that the problem was nothing or temporary, the doctor explained to me that I suffered from a degenerative eye disease. I was devastated, but I knew that I needed to press on. It has been a rough few years, but I have learned a lot about the journey. Check out this blog for information and motivation about eye care challenges.

Are Cataracts Causing Night Blindness That Are Affecting Your Trucking Career?

Vision is one of the most important senses that a truck driver needs to develop in order to be successful. Poor vision, particularly at night, can not only decrease their success but even make them a threat to others. As a result, it is important to use eye surgeries like LASIK to manage this issue.

Night Blindness Can Be Dangerous For Truckers

Night blindness is known as nyctalopia and is heralded by symptoms such as blurry vision at night, difficulty focusing on an reading signs, and other problems. Truckers who develop night blindness may find it nearly impossible to successfully drive at night.

For example, they may struggle to read highway road signs and end up missing important turns. Even worse, they might not notice a person stalled in the middle of the road and cause a serious accident. As a result, understanding the causes of this condition are critical.

Cataracts Can Cause This Problem

While there are many potential causes for this issue, one of the most prominent of these is cataracts. As we age, just about everybody will start to develop a cloudy film over their eyes. This film is known as a cataract and it will make it nearly impossible for you to see if it grows to its full size.

One of the first symptoms of the development of this problem is a decrease in night vision. Therefore, truckers who are starting to notice that they are having a harder time reading signs or that they can't make out where they are going when driving at night may be developing cataracts. And early in the development of this problem, LASIK surgery may be a suitable option.

How LASIK Helps

LASIK is an interesting type of surgery because it utilizes lasers to improve a person's vision in a pain-free manner. Typically, it is used to correct eye shape and isn't always an option for cataracts. However, it's high level of success (about 95 percent of people who receive it improve their vision) make it a useful option for some types of cataracts.

For truckers who want to get immediately back into the swing of things, LASIK is a good choice. It will manage their minor cataracts and provide them with improved night vision. In this way, they can keep going on deliveries during the night without increasing their risk of an accident caused by missing a sign or taking a wrong turn at the wrong time.

So if you notice that your small cataracts are causing severe night blindness problems, it is a good idea to immediately talk to an eye surgeon right away, such as at Idaho Eye and Laser center. Even if LASIK isn't the best option for you, they can find a treatment method that works for your specific needs.
